Introduction

Let me introduce you to the fabulous Top Enigma Sewing Pattern — one of those rare patterns that people just keep coming back to. Why? Because it’s comfy, versatile, and looks seriously professional even when sewn at home. Plenty of sewists have written to me with glowing feedback about how it fits and feels, so you’re in very good company here.

And here’s the best bit: this top works double duty. Wear it as a stylish sports top for the gym, or pair it with a matching bottom for a chic swimwear set. In this guide, I’ll show you two ways to sew the Enigma: the first is a single-layer version (perfect for beginners), and the second is a clever double-layer method that hides seams beautifully.

Materials & Tools You’ll Need

When it comes to fabric, your options are deliciously endless. Any stretchable fabric works, but for the best comfort and performance, I recommend a good four-way stretch — think polyester, spandex, or lycra. These fibres hug the body beautifully and bounce back after movement, making the top perfect for gym workouts or even as swimwear. If you’re in the mood to experiment, stretchable velvet also looks fabulous, giving the Enigma a touch of luxury.

And if you’d like to take the design into lingerie territory, you can absolutely do that too. Try sewing the single-layer version with a gorgeous stretch lace or even a transparent four-way stretch mesh. Some customers sent me their lace versions, and let me tell you — the results were stunning, a perfect crossover between comfy and sultry.

Elastic — the soul of stretch

You’ll need fold-over elastic mine is 1.5 cm wide, but you can go wiled and use 2-2.5 cm as well. It gives a clean edge finish around the neckline, armholes, and hem. If you want a sportier vibe, you can replace the bottom edge with a wider gym-style trim elastic — just remember that the wider it is, the longer your top becomes.

Threads & Needles — the real power couple

Matching your fabric and elastic with polyester thread is the safest bet. Polyester has built-in stretch recovery, which means your stitches won’t snap the moment you reach for the top shelf or do a sun salutation. Cotton thread, on the other hand, tends to break on stretch fabrics — so save that for quilting projects.

Pair your thread with 75/11 needles. These are sharp enough to pierce fine knits without leaving runs, yet delicate enough not to chew up elastic edges. If your machine sometimes skips stitches on stretchy fabrics, try a ballpoint or stretch needle in the same size — they glide between fibres instead of piercing them. Keep a few extras on hand, because sewing elastic can dull a needle faster than you’d think.

Pro tip: always test on a fabric scrap first. If you hear a faint popping sound while sewing, that’s your needle breaking fibres — time to swap it. Smooth, silent stitching is your green light that fabric, thread, and needle are all working in harmony.

Cutting & Marking Tools

You’ll need sharp scissors or a rotary cutter and healing mat for precise cutting. Use chalk to outline your pattern if you use a scissors and pins to secure your pieces before stitching.

Little Helpers

A lighter comes in handy to gently melt and seal elastic ends — that’s how I usually finish mine to keep everything neat. But this is simply the way I operate, not a strict rule. If you’re not comfortable using a lighter, feel free to skip it or use another method that works for you. And of course, your sewing machine will do the job perfectly — no overlocker needed.

Assembly Tips

Before we jump into sewing, let’s talk about putting your pattern together. This part is just as important as the stitching itself, because if the pieces don’t match, the whole top won’t sit right.

First things first: the pattern is designed for A4 paper only! No sneaky swaps with Letter size — it simply won’t work. Make sure to print at 100% scale and check the little square on the first page. It must measure exactly 5 × 5 cm. If it’s off, adjust your printer settings and try again.

Because the Enigma top is larger than one sheet of paper (obviously 😂!), the pattern comes divided across multiple pages. To make life easier, I’ve added triangle markers. Inside each triangle you’ll see codes like 1A, 2A, 3A for the front element and 1B, 2B, 3B for the back element. Your job is to play a little matching game: line up 1A with 1A, 2A with 2A, and so on. Stick them together, and slowly your puzzle will transform into a full front piece. Repeat with the B-series triangles to build your back piece.

Once everything is taped together neatly, you’ll have your complete pattern ready to trace and cut. It’s simple, foolproof, and honestly a bit satisfying — like sewing Sudoku!
Ahhh… Almost forgot to mention, here’s the biggest bonus of my patterns: the seam allowance is already included. That means no more “oh no, I forgot to add it” moments and no ruined projects heading for the bin. You can jump straight into cutting and sewing without overthinking — just prepare the fabric and go.

Method 1: Single-Layer Version

If you’re new to lingerie sewing, this method is a great starting point. Here’s how it works:

Start by placing the pattern on your stretch fabric and marking it with chalk. Cut out the pieces with scissors or a rotary cutter. Place the back element on top of the front, right sides together, and align side and shoulder seams. Pin them in place.

Now stitch the side and shoulder seams using your machine (or an overlocker if you have one). Press the seams towards the back piece. Next, grab your fold-over elastic and sew it along the neckline, armholes, and hem. Stretch the elastic slightly as you sew, but don’t pull the fabric itself.

Trim any loose threads, seal the elastic ends with a lighter, and your single-layer Enigma top is ready to wear! For a full demonstration of this method, you can follow along with my YouTube tutorial.

Method 2: Double-Layer Version

This version is perfect if you love neat finishes or don’t have an overlocker. All the seams are hidden between layers, so the inside looks as clean as the outside.

Begin by laying the front piece on a flat surface, right side up. Place the back piece on top, right side down. Then add the second front piece on top, also right side down. The back piece is now sandwiched between two front layers.

Pin the shoulder and side seams. Stitch them with your sewing machine using elastic or zig-zag stitch — the seams will be tucked inside, creating a professional finish without an overlocker. Turn the top right side out and admire your work.

Now finish all raw edges with fold-over elastic. Sew it around the neckline, armholes, and hem, stretching the elastic gently as you go. For the hem, you can use either fold-over elastic for a crop finish or a thicker gym band for extra coverage. Remember: a 3 cm band adds 3 cm length, a 5 cm band adds 5 cm, and so on.

Seal elastic ends with a lighter (if you use one), give the top a quick press, and you’ve got a double-layer Enigma ready for action.
