The Struggle: Why Your Elastic Won’t Play Fair?

I bet we’ve all been there, trying our best to sew a straight line only to end up with stitches that won’t stay put, and believe me, there is zero judgment from my side 😂. I remember when I started sewing underwear, and I had those “drama” projects where the elastic sits right on top of the fabric.

I’m talking about those projects when you’ve finished your edges on the overlocker with a rolled hem to get that “marshmallow ruffle” look, or maybe you’re leaving the edges raw because it’s mesh. This technique is a total lifesaver when you’re using Nylon Elastic Lace. You know the one – with the pretty scallops that you definitely don’t want to cut off or hide. You place the elastic on top of the fabric near the scallops (I do this all the time for Boy Short Panties Sewing Pattern designs), but the moment you start sewing, that elastic starts sliding right and left. It’s like wrestling with a tiny, stretchy Evil. 😂

The Fix: The “Hole in the Foot” Magic Trick

I went through this a thousand times before I figured out how to keep the stitches perfectly in the middle. Here is the secret: you need to use the actual structure of your sewing machine foot.

Remove the foot: Take the foot off your machine.
Find the “Secret Pass”: In the middle of your sewing machine foot, there is a small space or a hole.
The Plastic Barrier: Some feet (like on my Brother machine) have a little plastic cover over. If it bothers you, just slide it off. If yours is already open, you’re good to go!
Thread the Elastic: Grab the elastic you’re about to use. For example, I often use Elastic 10mm. Feed the elastic exactly through that hole in the foot.
Reattach: Place the foot (with the elastic already threaded through it) back onto your machine.

Now, when you sew, the foot itself acts as a guide. The elastic literally has nowhere else to go! It’s trapped in the middle, which is exactly where we want it.

Testing Your Settings (And Saving Your Butt)

Before you go full speed on your Stretch Mesh Fabric or fancy lace, do a test run. Sew a few centimetres to see if the stitches are landing exactly where you want.

Once you’re happy, put your fabric under the foot, stretch the elastic just a tiny bit (don’t stretch the fabric!), and go. Even if you’re wiggling the elastic, it will stay perfectly aligned. This works even if you’ve just taken your machine out of the box for the first time in your life!

The Mini – Drama: The Garter Belt Save

I once used this trick while making an Adjustable Garter Belt “Lara”. I had two lace triangles that I needed to join, and I absolutely hated the visible seam in the middle. It looked… well, not “boutique.”

So, I threaded my elastic through the foot, placed the ugly seam right in the middle, and sewed over it. The elastic covered the seam completely, the stitches were dead-centre, and the garment came out looking like it belonged in a high-end boutique. Total win! 🏆

The Moral of the Story
