How to Sew Top-Bra “Fancy” (Beginner-Friendly Sewing Pattern)

Introduction

Let me introduce you to Top-Bra “Fancy” — a bold and versatile sewing pattern that looks just as good in the gym as it does at a festival or in your lingerie drawer. Its signature feature is the arch cut-out at the top of the bust, giving it a playful twist and endless styling possibilities.

Fancy has already been stitched up by sewists all around the world: some turned it into a sporty crop top, others into delicate lace lingerie, and many into a casual statement piece for everyday wear. If you’d like to try it for yourself, grab the Top-Bra “Fancy” sewing pattern and let’s dive into the details together.

Materials & Tools You’ll Need

Fancy can adapt to whatever fabric mood you’re in. For sporty and supportive makes, reach for spandex, Lycra, or polyester with four-way stretch. For something softer, go for jersey. And if you want a lingerie-inspired masterpiece, lace with scallop edges is perfect — here’s a beautiful lace option that works brilliantly.

Elastic essentials.

Fold-over elastic is easy and neat, while picot elastic gives Fancy a more lingerie-styled edge. If you prefer sporty support, a wide underbust band elastic is a great choice.

Straps & ribbons.

Classic elastic straps with rings and sliders always work, but Fancy really shines when you swap them out for satin ribbons. Imagine tying delicate bows at the shoulders or even layering multiple slim ribbons for a unique look — it’s stunning and totally changes the vibe.

Thread, needles & machines.

Stick with polyester thread and 75/11 needles. You can sew Fancy entirely on a regular sewing machine with zigzag or elastic stitches. An overlocker is a bonus, especially for single-layer versions, but not essential.

Cutting & marking tools.

Keep things sharp and accurate with scissors or a rotary cutter on a healing mat. Mark strap notches with chalk and secure fabric layers with pins.

Preparation Tips

Print your pattern on A4 paper and always measure the 5×5 cm test square before cutting. Larger sizes will need a few sheets joined — just match the triangle markers (A1+A1). Seam allowance is already included, so you can cut straight away.

Place the pattern pieces on the fabric fold where marked. Be especially careful with the arch cut-out at the top: align it evenly so both sides are symmetrical. If you’re sewing with lace, position the hem slightly above the scallop edge (about 1–1.5 cm) to keep those decorative scallops showing.

Method 1: Double-Layer Front (support & hidden seams)

Cut one back element and two fronts. Make a little “sandwich”: front piece right-side up, place the back right-side down on top (so front & back are face-to-face), then lay the second front right-side down (so the two front pieces are face-to-face). Align both side seams, pin/clip, and sew both sides.

Then stitch only the two front layers along the top arch cut-out. Flip right-side out — now the arch is neatly lined and seams are hidden.

Finish the neckline, armholes, and underbust with elastic, leaving 2 cm at strap points to add rings. Use FOE for a clean sporty look, or picot for a softer lingerie finish. For extra support, attach a wide elastic band at the hem.

When it’s time for straps, you can go classic with adjustable straps everywhere — or you can try some decorative chains in front for a standout finish. For step-by-step help, watch this video here: How To Sew Crop Top Fancy.

Method 2: Single-Layer Fancy (quick & casual)

If you’re short on fabric, time or you want something cozy for lounging at home, the single-layer method is your friend.

Cut one front and one back, sew the side seams, and turn right-side out. Since the seams are exposed inside, finish them neatly with zigzag or an elastic stitch if you don’t have an overlocker.

Stabilise the top arch cut-out with FOE or picot elastic. Then continue with elastic around the neckline and armholes, leaving 2 cm at strap points to add rings or sliders. Hem with FOE directly from the roll, or attach a looped band elastic for a different finish.
Once the top is complete, attach adjustable shoulder straps (or any straps if you’re making a sporty or swimwear version). If you’re not sure which style to pick, check out my video on five different methods how to make the straps — they all work beautifully for this crop top.

This method is quick, comfy, and perfect for casual bralettes or crop tops.

Method 3: Lace Fancy with Scallop Hem

If you’re after lingerie elegance, lace Fancy is a showstopper.

Cut the front and back with the bottom edge sitting just above the lace scallops so they peek out beautifully after sewing. Sew side seams, press them toward the back, and topstitch flat with zigzag or elastic stitch.

For the top arch and neckline, sew FOE or picot elastic, again leaving room at strap points. At the hem, avoid FOE — instead, use slim elastic like you see on the image below sewn just above the scallop line so the lace edge stays decorative and free.

Strap styling. Keep the shoulder straps adjustable — use strap elastic with rings and sliders so they can be fine-tuned for comfort. For the front arch cut-out, instead of elastic or a jewellery connector, you can insert a ribbon. It looks elegant, soft, and gives Fancy a really unique character.

Fitting & Adjustments

Elastic rule: never pre-cut elastic. Always sew from the roll and trim after. Stretch the elastic slightly, not the fabric, and keep the pull consistent.

Strap testing is key. Pin straps in place, try the bra on, and adjust the length before stitching securely. This saves you from straps that dig or slide.

Want a softer version? Redraw the arch cut-out shallower before cutting. This adjustment keeps Fancy’s look but makes it less revealing.

Finishing Touches

Snip threads, tidy elastic ends, and give everything a clean press. Add bows, ribbons, or even a chain at the arch for decoration.

Fancy doesn’t have to stay hidden as lingerie — wear it as a crop top with jeans, layer it under sheer tops, or style it as a festival bralette. However you wear it, Fancy is as versatile as it is fun to sew.
