How to Understand Differential Feed on an Overlocker in Simple Words

Have you ever stared at the differential dial on your overlocker like it personally offended you? 😅 You twist it. You un-twist it. You twist it again (because obviously it will magically behave the second time). And still – your seam looks like it’s having a little panic attack.

Yep. Been there.

Hi everyone, my name is Ayona, and I’ve been sewing for as long as I can remember. In this article, I’m going to share a simple, real-life way to understand differential feed on an overlocker so it finally makes sense. And if you’ve been struggling to use it (or even understand what it does), this is for you – because by the end, you will totally understand what it is and how it’s used.

The struggle: “People give settings… but my fabric is not their fabric”

I remember when I bought my first overlocker – the Bernina 1300 MDC – and it had about 10,000 settings (OK maybe not literally, but emotionally it did). I started watching loads of videos. Some were useful. Some… honestly… made zero sense.

Then I stumbled on differential feed, and people kept giving “perfect settings” for a specific fabric.

But here’s the drama:

  • I had my own fabric.
  • My own thickness.
  • My own number of layers.
  • And I had no clue what settings to choose.

So I’d roll the dial from minimum to maximum like I’m cracking a safe… and nothing worked. Not because the machine was bad – because I didn’t understand what I was doing or what the differential was actually for.

And this is exactly why I’m sharing this explanation, because I tell it to people all the time when they buy their first overlocker and ask, “What is this dial? When I roll it, what does it affect?” And when they hear the example, it’s like someone flips their brain upside down (in a good way 😂).

Your fix: the “walking steps” example (summer vs deep snow)

Here’s the simple example that makes it click.

Imagine this

It’s summer. Warm day. You’re wearing comfy shoes. What kind of steps do you take when you walk?

Normal human steps. Easy. No drama.

Now imagine the opposite:

  • Deep snow – like higher than your nails
    OR
  • You’re walking into water – like ocean, lake, river – up to your knees

Now I ask you to walk.

What kind of steps are you going to do?

Yep – bigger steps, deeper steps, stronger steps, because you need to push through the resistance of the snow or water.

Now translate that to the overlocker

The overlocker’s needles are like little legs taking steps as they sew.

  • Light fabric (like chiffon, very light mesh, fluffy transparent “flying” fabric) = summer walking
    There’s little resistance, so the machine doesn’t need big “steps”.
  • Heavy fabric (like denim, especially 4 – 5 layers, or warm coat fabric) = deep snow
    There’s big resistance, so the machine needs bigger “steps” to pass through.

That’s the heart of differential feed in simple words.

So what happens if you set it “wrong”?

Now I’ll explain it in reverse, because this is where people really go “OHHHHH”.

Thick fabric + differential on minimum = stitches crowd together

If you use a thick fabric – many layers of denim, coat fabric, winter fabric – and you put the differential to minimum, the resistance is big but your “steps” are too small.

So the stitches end up almost in the same place – the distance between one stitch and the next becomes too small, and it doesn’t look professional. Visually it’s just not pleasing.

But if you put the differential up towards maximum, the stitch spacing becomes more appropriate, more beautiful, more clean. And when you look at your finished project, it looks aesthetically neat – like a boutique coat, not like your machine was fighting for its life.

Light fabric + differential on maximum = stitches look weird and stretched

Now flip it:

If you use a very light fabric and you crank the differential to maximum, the steps become too large. The distance between stitches looks wrong – like something is off.

But if you put it down towards minimum, the machine does proper steps for that light fabric, because there’s no resistance to push through. You don’t get tiny crowded dots (like thick fabric on minimum), and you don’t get big weird spacing (like light fabric on maximum). You get the “right” look.

My “default” differential settings (what I actually do)

Most of the time, when I use a standard, mid-thickness fabric, my differential sits in the middle or N.

Then:

  • If I go to lighter fabric, I sometimes go below N
  • If I sew very heavy fabric, I sometimes go right up to the maximum

Story sprinkle: the winter coat moment (when max differential saved me)

I remember sewing a winter coat for myself, and I needed to attach the collar (yes, that part). It was four layers of thick fabric.

I set the differential to maximum.

And suddenly the needles weren’t “stepping on the same place” making those tiny crowded stitches. Instead, the stitches looked perfectly professional – like you bought the coat in a boutique.

That’s the moment I realise differential feed isn’t some mysterious “pro feature”. It’s just… machine trying to take the right size steps for the fabric it’s walking through. Simple.

If it helps, think like this:

  • Chiffon / super light mesh / fluffy transparent fabric = summer steps
    Example fabric: Chiffon Fabric
  • Denim – especially multiple layers = deep snow steps
