The mindset was very much, “If I give away my secrets, she’ll steal my business and start selling my cot mobiles. 🤦♀️😂” That phase is long gone now. But I still remember how desperately I wanted to recreate that mirror effect on my own work and did not even know the name of this miracle leather 🙈.

What Is Holographic Mirrored Leather?
Holographic mirrored leather is basically artificial leather. Think about the material used for bags or boots, but with a shiny reflective coating on top. It has that mirror-like surface where you can literally see yourself. That is why I call it mirrored leather. If you search online, you will usually find it listed as holographic leather.
It is surprisingly difficult to find in local UK shops. I tried a few physical stores and failed. Eventually, I started searching online and found a reliable supplier on Amazon. Since then, I buy it there regularly. If you live somewhere with larger craft shops, you might find it locally. But for many of us, online is the easiest option.
Now let’s talk about the fun part – where to actually use it.
Using Mirrored Leather on Christmas Ornaments
One of my favourite ways to use it is on Christmas Ornaments. Compared to traditional felt decorations, this material instantly brings your creation to another level. It looks almost store-bought, even though it is handmade at home.
However, I do not make full toys entirely from holographic leather. I prefer using it as an accent. For example, I often create the Moon Bear. I make the bear itself from Soft Felt, but I replace the moon with holographic mirrored leather. Then I attach the moon to the paws using a Glue Gun. That small shiny detail completely transforms the look.
It is a simple change, but visually it makes a huge difference.
Stitching Tips – Fishing Line Matters
When stitching this leather, I strongly recommend using fishing line instead of regular Threads. But the thickness is very important. If you choose something too thick, your creation will become stiff and unattractive.
The sweet spot is around Fishing line 0.14mm. I personally use Fishing line 0.148mm, and I have also used 0.145mm successfully. Stay within that range. It gives you a more seamless, almost invisible finish and is stronger than standard thread.
The leather itself is not soft, so the wrong fishing line can make it look bulky. The correct one keeps everything neat and elegant.
Not Just for Winter – Use It on Cot Mobiles
You might be reading this in the middle of summer thinking, “I am not sewing Christmas ornaments right now.” Fair enough. Let’s talk about cot mobiles.
I love using holographic mirrored leather for small elements on cot mobiles. The creatures themselves are made from felt, but I add stars or hearts between them using leather. You can use shapes from the Heart and Star Felt Toy Sewing Pattern.
It makes the mobile look more balanced and less cluttered. If you only add creatures without spacing elements, it can look busy. Shiny stars or hearts break up the design beautifully. Children are genuinely mesmerised by the reflection.
Parrots, Dinosaurs and Double-Sided Trick
Another favourite use is when I create parrots using the Cockatoo Felt Toy Sewing Pattern. I use mirrored leather for the tail or the feather on top of the head. But there is one important rule.
Leather has one shiny side and one dull fluffy side. If you use only one layer, your toy will have a right side and a wrong side. One side beautiful, the other side… not so much.
So always cut two mirrored pieces and stitch them together. Then insert the finished feather between the layers of the head. This way, whichever direction the toy turns, it shines on both sides.
I also use this technique for dinosaur spikes. Sometimes I glue small leather spots on the body using a glue gun. And when I have small leftover pieces, I never throw them away. I pre-cut small circles or shapes and store them in a zip bag. Later, I simply grab them and attach them without doing boring cutting work again.
Small Accents Make a Big Difference
You do not need to cover your entire toy in holographic leather. A small accent is often more effective. It adds interest without overpowering the design.
